Hockey concussion: Is it child abuse? CMAJ, May 15, 2012, 184(8)

Concussion has been a widespread issue in various sports, especially football, soccer and hockey. Concussion also could happen due to traumatic brain injury. Following the injury, symptoms linger due to the swelling of neurons in the damaged area of the brain, causing dysfunction of those neurons. It may result in the death of neural connections. Our goal is to identify the damaged areas using functional diagnostic techniques which explore brain functions.

Balance testing

One of the functional assessments involves the balance evaluation. This gives us information about processing activities in various centers of the brain. Concussion may affect your balance, gait and cognitive function.

Therefore, our balance assessment using computerized system could provide us objective data and detect slight balance disorder, otherwise undetectable.

Based on our comprehensive exams, we find areas of dysfunctions affecting your balance, cognitive functions, gait. Even if you don't have symptoms, your function might be compromised. In order to resolve the symptoms and improve reduced functions, new connections, aka., neuroplasticity,  are encouraged through various stimulations appropriate for the specific area of the brain. One specific brain area often damaged in a concussion is the vestibular system. Injury to the vestibular system may cause dizziness and balance issues. We employ non-invasive receptor-based stimulation to targeted areas of the brain or nervous systems to reduce neurologic imbalance and improve function. Please click here to find out about our methods of rehabilitation.
